I’m so excited to be bringing the Positive Birth Movement to Tooting!  I’ve been a supporter of the movement for some time now and thrilled to be facilitating a group with my friend and colleague Nikki Bishop  – an amazing midwife and mum.

So what exactly is The Positive Birth Movement?

It’s global movement that has gained a lot of traction over the last few years and really is helping to change the way we talk about birth in the media, amongst birth professionals and in our society as a whole.  With over 250 groups in the UK and 200 more in 36 different countries, there is an obvious demand from women around the world to shake up the way we talk about birth.

At the very core of The Positive Birth Movement is a belief that every woman deserves a positive birth. But what does that actually mean?  After all one woman’s idea of a positive birth experience will be very different to the next.  Whilst one may choose to birth her baby in hospital under the care of an obstetrician, another may choose to be in her own home with a midwife present.  The PBM places absolutely no judgement on women’s birth choices; a positive birth simply means that:

  • Women are where they want to be
  • Choices are informed by reality not fear
  • Women are listened to and treated with respect and dignity
  • Mothers are empowered and enriched
  • Memories are warm and proud

Unfortunately we still live in a world where this is a reality for too few woman so the PBM exists to right this wrong by:

·      Challenging the culture of negativity and fear that exists around birth
·      Sharing positive birth experiences
·      Sharing information about choices and rights in childbirth
·      Encouraging women to raise their expectations of childbirth

Every PBM group is free to attend and we are running monthly meet-ups in Tooting on the first Monday of every month at 7.30pm.  The group is friendly space for pregnant women to connect, share stories, expertise and positivity about childbirth.  There will always be cake!  Whenever Nikki and I meet up for coffee we talk endlessly about birth so it seems a natural progression for us to open this up to the wider community and allow other women to share their wisdom.  The only condition of attendance is that you want to contribute positively to conversations about birth.  We look forward to seeing you at our first meet- up!

Love Alex & Nikki xx
